Is Grammar Dependence Real

چکیده
1. Introduction It has long been observed that the phonology of a language is not completely uniform. In addition to well-studied free variation in pronunciation of certain words or word classes, phonological patterns can vary by register, morphological category (e.g., noun vs. verb), lexical stratum (native vs. foreign), morphological class (stem vs. affix, reduplicant vs. base), and so forth. We will refer to such variant patterns as subgrammatical phonological patterns. A complete phonological analysis of any language must address subgrammatical variation; indeed, characterizing the range of variation possible has been an explicit desideratum of certain phonological theories (e.g. Lexical Morphology and Phonology, which gave rise to the Stratum and Strong Domain Hypotheses of Mohanan 1986 and Kiparsky 1984). In Optimality Theory (OT) there have been two major proposals to handle subgrammatical variation:

Is grammar dependence real? A comparison between cophonological and indexed constraint approaches to morphologically conditioned phonology*
This article compares and contrasts cophonology theory and indexed constraint theory, the dominant current proposals to morphologically conditioned phonology. In cophonology theory, morphologically conditioned phonology is captured by associating each morphological construction or lexical class with its own phonological grammar, or cophonology. All constraints within a given cophonology are pur...
متن کاملA Correlational Study of Expectancy Grammar’s Manifestation on Cloze Test and Lexical Collocational Density
The notion of expectancy grammar as a key to understanding the nature of psychologically real processes that underlie language use is introduced by Oller (1979). A central issue in this notion is that expectancy generating systems are constructed and modified in the course of language acquisition. Thus, one of the characteristics of language proficiency is that it consists of such an expectancy...
متن کاملParameter Estimation of Some Archimedean Copulas Based on Minimum Cramér-von-Mises Distance
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new estimation method for estimating the Archimedean copula dependence parameter in the non-parametric setting. The estimation of the dependence parameter has been selected as the value that minimizes the Cramér-von-Mises distance which measures the distance between Empirical Bernstein Kendall distribution function and true Kendall distribution functi...
متن کاملStudy On Universal Lossless Data Compression by using Context Dependence Multilevel Pattern Matching Grammar Transform
In this paper, the context dependence multilevel pattern matching(in short CDMPM) grammar transform is proposed; based on this grammar transform, the universal lossless data compression algorithm, CDMPM code is then developed. Moreover, it is proved that this algorithms’ worst case redundancy among all individual sequences of length n from a finite alphabet is upper bounded by ) log / 1 ( n C w...
متن کاملThe Effects of Game-based Learning on the Grammatical Accuracy of Iranian High school Students
Teaching grammar has always been a problematic area of language teaching. While teachers spend a great deal of time and energy to teach, the students are not eager to learn as they find it a real chore. This study compared two kinds of activities for teaching grammar: games and traditional exercises. It sought to discover the effect of games on the students’ grammatical accuracy. For this purp...
متن کاملThe Role of Textual vs. Compound Input Enhancement in Developing Grammar Ability
The present study investigated comparatively the impact of two types of input enhancement (i.e. textual vs. compound enhancement) on developing grammar ability in Iranian EFL setting. Sixty-five female secondary high school students were selected as a homogenous sample out of about a 100-member population based on Nelson language proficiency test. Then, their grammar ability was measured based ...
